We go to Niagara Falls a couple of times a year and one year on a winter visit as we were walking back to our hotel, I thought I heard a Nigerian accent when a panhandler spoke. When my husband caught up I told him that I think the man was Nigerian. We listened again and his thank you was definitely Nigerian. So I walked up to him and he confirmed that he was and that he was from Benue state. When I asked him his name he was kind of evasive. Personally I thought he sounded southern. I didn’t have any CAD on me just 20 USD. I asked him if he would have trouble changing it to CAD and he said no. Honestly, the experience sort of dampened my mood. I was fairly convinced that only two things could possibly cause a Nigerian to panhandle in a foreign country. Mental illness or a drug problem. I stood at the window on and off for most of the day until he left. He stayed on my mind. Then on the next visit, guess who was sitting right at the same spot? Our room always faces the falls and usually anything above the 6th floor so I saw him before we took our first walk. I was shocked to see him again. I think that’s when it started dawning on me that in fact Nigerians do leave Nigeria and struggle this much. Sometimes I wonder if it’s not better to just go back home. Heck, raise a little bit of money and keep it aside until you have enough to return home. Maybe I’m just too naive or too optimistic. As they say though, it’s he who wears the shoe that knows where it pinches. He has his reasons.
